Puckerings has dated this piece to the 1910s.
The brass button at the front opens the top lid to view the watch inside, but it cannot be removed here. To do this the box has to be unlocked (working key) and removed or by removing the removable tray, behind this is a compartment where the chain would rest. The underside or the tray reveals the remnants of the label stating that this box (and presumably originally the watch) was "Issued From Royal Observatory, Greenwich".
Excellent condition, wear commensurate with age, measuring 4 1/2" x 3 5/8" x 2 3/4" including four feet.
