The Tang Dynasty hollow-moulded terracotta horse shown , as it stands erect on an integral rectangular base. (The base has small cut corners making it actually octagonal). The animal is portrayed in the caparisoned style, richly decorated with ornate piriform adornments to the collar and crupper strap. A moulded saddle with a folded cloth on the horse’s back, painted in orange and brown respectively, with the blanket further enriched by circular motifs rendered in dark pigmentation. The majority of the green, red and white slip remains on the horse’s body, emphasising the naturalistically moulded features: the strong physique, the alert pupils, and the horses mouth in a wild and ‘ready for action’ pose. This also suits the pawing action of the front raised leg in the typical “tang” style. The large flowing mane is cropped and neatly groomed, with the shortened tail dressed with a ribbon.

The Tang Horse is made of high-quality terracotta and has been well-preserved, making it a remarkable addition to any collection. Its Chinese theme and origin make it a valuable piece of art that represents the rich heritage of China especially during Tang Dynasty.
