19thc Mahogany Library Steps

19th century
For Sale by Andros Antiques
Description

This Set of 19thc Mahogany Library Steps are of a good chunky design. Standing on good sized finely turned legs, with paneled sides. The tops have a decorative reeded edge moulding, and the fronts are embellished with an Ebony line inlay.

The top flap lifts up to reveal a decent storage area, and the middle draw also provides additional storage. This piece was originally a commode, but sometime in its life has been converted to incorporate the drawer.

The tooled green leather tops are nicely distressed with a subtle fade to their middles that work so well on this piece. The generously proportioned brass handles add further decorative appeal.

Would work well as a bedside piece or anywhere in the home used as a lamp table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Library steps were designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to allow safe access to elevated bookshelves in private study rooms and gentlemans libraries, frequently incorporating storage drawers or metamorphic mechanisms.

Primary construction timbers included solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, with treads often lined with gilt-tooled leather inserts to provide grip and finished with brass fittings such as handles or castors.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, original hand-tooled leather tread surfaces displaying age-appropriate patination, and turned or reeded leg columns consistent with historic woodworking.

These versatile pieces serve as distinct side tables beside low armchairs, elevated plant stands in living rooms, or bedside steps adjacent to tall mattress frames.

Timber surfaces require regular dusting and periodic application of beeswax polish, while the leather tread inserts should be conditioned with dedicated leather cream to prevent drying and cracking.
