Archibald Standish Hartrick OBE RWS 1864- 1950
A well painted harbour scene that shows a young female in Victorian daywear and her small infant brother playing on a wrecked boat.
Painted with pleasing detail and good colours. Signed lower right, presented within a glazed gilt frame with ivory coloured washline mount.
Archibald was born in India and was the son of a British Army Captain who was stationed in Bangalore. He was later educated in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. Archibald studied medicine and later learnt to paint under Alphonse Legros at the Slade during the 1880’s following on to Paris where he worked at the Academie Julian and in Cormon’s studio during the 1860’s and 70s.
Archibald became friends with Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gough and Gauguin. After his stay in Paris, Archibald moved to Glasgow and later settled in London to work as an illustrator for a number of magazines to include The Graphic during the 1890’s. Whilst in London, Archibald met American artist and illustrator Joseph Pennell.
Archibald went on to marry floral painter Lily Blatherwick and the pair moved to Gloucestershire for a short time, eventually settling back in London in 1907 when Archibald became a life drawing and lithography teacher. From 1914 onward he taught lithography at the Central School of Art and Design.
