Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Seal Peppers (1882)

19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive, and rare pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver seal peppers; an addition to our 19th century novelty silver cruets/condiments collection.

These exceptional and rare antique Victorian English sterling silver peppers have been modelled in the form of seals.

The surface of each piece is embellished with engraved decoration, replicating the texture of the seal's skin and anatomical features.

Each of the silver seals retains the original, hallmarked push fit cover/head ornamented to the upper portion with pierced 'pepper' holes.

The cover of these sterling silver seal pepper shakers are further ornamented with the original eyes.

This exceptional Victorian silver set is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, and secures with a push fit catch.

Such exceptional examples in this fine condition and presented in their original box are rare to the market.

Condition

These antique Victorian novelty sterling silver peppers are a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.

The original presentation box is in excellent condition in keeping with age.

Full hallmarks to the surface of each seal and part hallmarks to each sleeve are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these novelty silver peppers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth century, British silversmiths began producing dining accessories inspired by natural history and whimsical animal forms. These zoomorphic pepper casters and salt cellars served as conversational elements for elaborate Victorian dinner tables.

High-grade sterling silver was the standard material, often cast or raised from sheet metal and finished with hand-chased surface details. Presentation sets were typically fitted into velvet-lined leather cases to protect the polished metal work.

Authentic British silver from this era features a standard set of stamped marks: a lion passant indicating sterling purity, a makers mark, a town mark such as a leopards head for London, and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Small novelty silver pieces are frequently arranged inside glazed display cabinets, placed on sideboard tops, or styled alongside contemporary table settings to add contrast and historic texture.

Gently wipe the surface using a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish to remove oxidisation, taking care around intricate engraving. Avoid immersing fitted display cases or velvet linings in liquid cleaners.
