Art Deco French Spelter Bookends C1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A pair of Art Deco era French bookends, c1930, made of spelter, in the form of prancing mountain goats. Spelter, which enables high definition, was popular in France for sculpture and models as an alternative to bronze, which was more expensive. Here the mountain goats have a bronzed finish in highlighted areas. The mountain goats are mounted on solid dark grey marble bases and the books will be held in place by the raised forelegs of the animals. The bookends are in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the 1920s and 1930s, Art Deco spelter bookends feature stylised, dynamic animal or human figures cast in a zinc alloy and typically mounted on polished marble or onyx bases.

Craftsmen primarily used spelter, a zinc-based alloy patinated to resemble bronze, anchored onto heavy marble, slate, or onyx bases to provide weight for supporting books.

Genuine period pieces exhibit characteristic Art Deco geometric forms, natural age-appropriate wear to the patinated finish, and original threaded rod fixings visible beneath the marble bases.

Position these sculptural pieces on a minimal floating shelf, a modern executive desk, or a dark timber bookcase to introduce a geometric vintage accent.

Dust gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding water or abrasive chemical cleaners that could damage the delicate surface patina of the metal or dull the marble base.
