Pair of early C19th French bronze allegorical sculptures of cherubs , emblematic of music and comedy after Clodion.
Beautifully cast pair of bronzes of cherubs or amorini in the manner of Clodion , mounted upon original giallo di siena marble bases .
One dancing cherub depicted playing a drum thus representing music , the other dressed as a jester wearing a cap with a bell , his hand holding a traditional jester’s sceptre or ‘marotte’ , representing comedy. Each supported on a naturalistically cast base with a tree trunk and floral details .
*these figural cherub bronzes are of a genre sculpted by Claude Michel (1738-1814) , known as Clodion , in the late C18th .
In excellent original condition with a consistent dark patination and colour . The undersides fitted with the original baize felt.
