The case features a wonderful niello design throughout that presents a distinguished and beautiful contrasting appearance. Niello refers to the type of decoration/technique in which the silver surface is engraved and a black mixture (usually sulphur, copper, silver and lead) is used as an inlay (powder or paste which is later fired and then cooled to achieve a smooth surface).
The interior is fully silver gilt which provides a layer of protection from the contents inside oxidising/tarnishing the silver.
The niello work is intricate, geometric and chic, featuring a tessellating quatrefoil pattern with a midsection of hand-engraved foliate motifs.
Whilst originally designed for holding cigarettes, this case could also be used for short-form cigars, holding matches or small items. A perfect gift or addition for the discerning individual and an equally delightful conversation starter.
French hallmarks are present on the inner lip of the case with two boar's head marks and a maker's mark EG.

Condition
Fair Condition - The cigarette case is in fair antique condition. The case has dents on corners with slight loss of niello where the indentation is present as shown in the photos. For accuracy: The lid closes but is a little loose. Otherwise in good order and wear commensurate with age.
