Signed lower right: Venturi. Renouned artist, painting very much in the Rembrandt style (man smoking a pipe). Other works by this artist (sold at auction) include Page Boy, and Paggetto.
In good condition. Canvas would benefit from further stretching. Overall dimensions (including frame): Height = 73.5cm; Width = 63cm.
*Born in Milan, he studied in Brescia, the city of origin of his family. Having enrolled at the Brera Academy, he was a pupil of Giuseppe Bertini, dedicating himself to historical painting. In 1880 he won the Brera triennial prize with the opera Giambellino ed Antonello da Messina. Other of his works, as well as in the Brera Academy, are preserved in the museum of modern art in Naples and in the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia.
