We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture originated in the 18th century and gained widespread popularity during the Victorian era. It is characterised by architectural elements borrowed from medieval gothic churches, such as pointed arches, quatrefoils, trefoils, blind tracery, and heavy carved timber.

Victorian Gothic Revival desks and tables were predominantly constructed from heavy native hardwoods, most commonly oak and walnut. Writing surfaces frequently incorporated inset leather or skiver inserts edged with blind or gilt tooling, alongside cast iron or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-carved medieval motifs, traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon or dovetail joints, and appropriate age-related patination. Examining the timber undersides and internal drawer construction reveals age-consistent tool marks and timber shrinkage.

A carved oak writing table serves as a strong focal point in a contemporary study or open-plan living area. Pairing the rich oak grain with neutral wall tones, modern brass lighting, and clean-lined contemporary seating balances the dramatic historic detailing.

Carved oak should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned annually with a high-grade beeswax polish. Leather surfaces require gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
