Antique French Ormolu Rococo Clock Set ~ Cupid

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1870 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A beautiful antique French ormolu clock set in the Rococo style. It features cupid as a cherub, seated to the top with torch and quiver of arrows, offering a posy of flowers. The case made of finely gilded bronze in the Louis XV style of bold scrolling acanthus forming a waisted case, standing upon a base. Fabric fretted panels lighten the design.

Candelabra are formed of boldly scrolling foliage with four lights. Snuffers sit in the central sconces when the candelabra are not in use. The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with finely fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen and the clock is decorated in the round allowing you to display on a table or in front of a mirror. The bottom of the pendulum can be glimpsed gently swinging within the case.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Vincenti. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/550791374288335

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also excellent with no damage, just a light hairline. Candelabra are slightly distorted.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French ormolu clock garniture is a decorative matching set comprising a central mantelpiece clock flanked by two candelabra or side urns. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in France, these sets feature gilded bronze metalwork executed in styles such as Rococo or Neoclassical.

These clock sets were crafted using cast bronze that was gilded via the mercury-gilding process to produce a durable gold layer. The timepieces feature mechanical movements with brass plates, steel pinions, white enamel dials, and hand-cut hands.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chiselled casting details, heavy weight, and evidence of original gilded surfaces. Clock movements often feature maker stamps, serial numbers, or French foundry marks on the back plate alongside enamelled Roman numerals on the dial.

Place the central clock and matching candelabra symmetrically on a marble fireplace mantelpiece or a polished dark wood sideboard. The gilded finish pairs effectively with deep background wall colours or period panelling in formal drawing rooms and dining spaces.

Dust the ornate surface regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to clean recessed areas without scratching. Avoid liquid metal cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these will permanently strip the thin layer of historical gilding.
