Daisy Makeig-jones Mottled Blue Lustre Bowl, Wedgwood, C. 1915

1900 - 1920
Description

This beautiful bowl, created by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood, features intricate gilded decorations. The exterior is adorned with patterns resembling Tibetan signs and symbols over a mottled blue underglaze. The interior boasts a mother-of-pearl lustre finish, with a gilded dragon at the center and elaborate gilded ornamentation along the inner rim. The base is marked with the Wedgwood Portland vase maker’s mark and the pattern number Z4831, confirming its authenticity.

Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones was a renowned pottery designer for Wedgwood, best known for her iconic "Fairyland Lustre" series. In 1914, Daisy became a full-time designer with her own studio. Inspired by the various decorative techniques used in ceramic production, she sought to create an entirely new and captivating style by blending three techniques: underglaze mottling, overglaze graining, and iridescence, combined with whimsical designs outlined in gilt.

Daisy collaborated with her studio neighbor, James Hodgkiss, and his decoration team to bring her vision to life. In October 1914, the first pattern in the "First Ten Lustre" series debuted. This collection, comprising consecutive pattern numbers Z4823 to Z4832, showcased ten different patterns, each with unique combinations of lustre colors.

Our bowl is pattern No. 9 in the Lustre Range, with pattern Z4831. This pattern marked the conclusion of the "First Ten Lustre" series. Daisy Makeig-Jones was passionate about adding her own distinct touch to the lustre pieces, and her designs have become highly collectible. The limited editions, combined with increasing interest in her work, have driven prices upward over the years, making her designs a sound investment for collectors.
