Beautiful antique Middle Eastern engraved copper charger. Circa 1860 (possibly much earlier due to this particular decorative pattern). Measures a massive 86.5cm in diameter.
Stunning and sizeable example of Islamic metalwork. The tray is made of thick high-quality copper, with some tin content (typical of earlier pieces) and is heavy. The intricate and detailed floral scrolling engravings surround a delicately chased central petal design. Of circular form with engraved decoration consisting of a central rosette medallion, very lightly embossed to edges of petal to simulate shading. Surrounded by concentric registers of interlocking straps and floriated scrollwork. More medallions, bow-shaped detailing, and a scrollwork banner form the the outer rings along with further engraving and embossing work to the flat rim. Skilled craftsmanship of the region''s artisans. Polished for display purposes and will develop the usual copper patina. Reverse plain and grey, without verdigris.
Excellent condition with no significant dents. Some minor pitting commensurate with age.
