Description

A rare pair of Japanese Imari porcelain tripod bowls, Arita, c. 1700, Genroku Period. Each bowl, set upon three mask feet, and painted with a continuous band of lappets containing stylised flowerheads, in the Imari style.

The interiors similarly decorated, within broad everted rims, heightened in gilt with scrollwork, and sprigs of flowering trees to the underside.

Diameter – 15.7 cm, 6 1/8”.

Height – 8 cm, 3 1/8”.

Condition – Slight wear to the gilt, commensurate with the age of the bowls. Some crazing to the glaze, and a firing fault to one footrim. No damage. No restoration.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed during the Edo period, it is characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding.

These bowls were crafted from fine kaolin clay, hand-thrown or molded, and fitted with hand-formed tripod feet. The initial design was painted in cobalt blue before glazing and firing, followed by secondary firings for enamel overglaze colours and gold leaf.

Authentic Edo-period pieces display precise hand-painted brushwork, spur marks on the base from kiln firing, uneven surface textures, and signs of gentle wear on the gilded highlights and unglazed foot rims.

Place them as decorative accents on a wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or shelf. Their contrast of rich cobalt blue, iron red, and gilt complements modern minimalist settings as well as traditional layered interiors.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid soaking early porcelain or using abrasive detergents, as water can degrade original overglaze enamels and gold ornamentation over time.
