Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 17th-century Europe, pier glasses were designed to fill the wall space between windows, known as the pier. Italian artisans refined this format during the 18th century, incorporating polychrome hand-painted floral motifs and gilded gesso frames characteristic of Venetian and Tuscan decorative arts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved softwoods or pine coated in a fine gesso layer. The frame is finished with water gilding using gold leaf and hand-painted tempera or oil decoration, framing mercury-glass or early plate glass mirrors.

Authentic examples display signs of age such as natural craquelure in the painted gesso ground, soft rubbing to the gilding revealing the underlying red or grey bole, and period-correct joinery or iron fixtures on the wooden reverse.

A painted pier glass functions effectively above a hallway console, dining room sideboard, or drawing room mantelpiece. Its ornate gilded frame provides a historical contrast against contemporary neutral wall paint or minimalist furnishings.

Dust the gilded and painted frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Avoid water, alcohol-based glass cleaners, or abrasive liquid polish, as moisture can dissolve gesso and damage delicate water gilding.
