Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire fenders were introduced to open hearths during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to serve as a low protective barrier. They prevented stray embers, coal, and ash from rolling onto wooden flooring or carpets while adding a decorative element to the fireplace.

Traditional fire fenders were predominantly constructed from solid brass, cast iron, wrought iron, or steel. Higher-end Victorian and Edwardian examples featured polished brass rails, turned finials, and cast metal bases for increased weight and stability.

Authentic period fenders generally display evidence of hand-assembly, including hand-threaded screws, irregular solder joints on interior seams, and natural surface wear or oxidisation. They also tend to be heavier than modern reproductions due to solid metal construction.

Position the fender directly in front of an active or decorative fireplace hearth to frame the opening. It can be paired with period-appropriate fire irons, companion sets, or coal scuttles to create a focal point in both contemporary and traditional rooms.

To preserve unlacquered brass, clean periodically with a specialised metal polish and a soft microfibre cloth. If a natural aged patina is preferred, dust regularly with a dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners that strip tarnish unevenly.
