Henry Martin Pope was an exceptional 19th century Midlands artist who exhibited widely later he founded the Birmingham Arts Circle whose elite members included Walter Langley, Edwin Harris, and William Banks Fortescue, in particular, he and Langley were good friends and often visited Newlyn together.
Henry Martin Pope is a highly regarded artist whose works are displayed in many museums and public galleries, including the Birmingham Museums Trust, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Y Gaer Museum and Art Gallery, and Dudley Museum.
This large and exceptional watercolour depicts a mountainous landscape most likely of the Llanberis Pass, Snowdonia, North Wales. It is painted in a restricted palette of three colours, brown, black and blue and cleverly uses the white of the paper for lighter elements.
It depicts the mountain region of Llanberis, Snowdonia, North Wales with a narrow winding track crossing over a bridge to higher ground with a storm taking place with sheeting rain producing terrific lighting. The painting is signed H Pope in the bottom left hand corner. It is displayed in its original limed oak frame with the original hand glass. It has had a new gilt slip and has been resealed on the back.
The painting is in very good condition, retaining good strong colours.
A very similar painting showing a different view of the Llanberis Pass on a more peaceful day is in the collection and on display at the Y Gaer Museum and Art Gallery, in Wales. It is painted in oils and is smaller in its proportions but bears a good resemblance to our painting. (see image ten)
NB: The Llanberis Pass in Snowdonia carries the main road from the south-east to Llanberis, over Pen-y-Pass, between the mountain ranges of the Glyderau and the Snowdon massif. At the bottom of the pass is the small village of Nant Peris
