Size: 6ft 2in x 3ft 3in (189 x 99cm).

Antique Baluch rug, by the Mahdad Khani tribe of the Ferdows region of Eastern Persia.

Circa 1890.

A interesting Baluch rug with large Tekke Turkmen guls on a rich aubergine coloured ground, note how the guls appear to disappear under the border at the sides and ends. The secondary gul is also drawn on a large scale. A very good Turkmen inspired Baluch rug.

The rug is in fair condition with un-even wear, heavy in places and medium / low pile pile; the condition is reflected in the price.

The rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Baluch rugs are traditional hand-knotted tribal carpets woven by nomadic tribes along the border regions of eastern Persia and Afghanistan, characterised by geometric motifs and saturated dark colour palettes.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes such as madder, indigo, and walnut shells.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces feature soft, lustrous wool, subtle natural dye variations known as abrash, dark undertones, and repeating geometric shapes such as octagons or cruciform stars.

The geometric patterning and rich terracotta and dark tones provide grounding contrast against neutral modern furniture, polished concrete floors, or traditional timber joinery.
