Description

Vanity-bags or 'chantehs' in Persian, were made by women for their personal use only, and contained a mirror, jewellery and coins.

This beautiful and finely knotted little bag was made by Qashqa'i nomads in Fars province, south-west Persia at the end of the 19th century and is in excellent condition with plain-weave back. The colours on the face are particulary stunning in natural shades of blue, golden yellow and red.

Bags like this were highly prized possessions amongst the nomadic women and were never intended for sale.
