Superb Japanese Meiji/taisho (early 20thc) Bronze Of A Seated Holy Kannon By Koun Takamura

Striking Japanese Meiji/Taisho (early 20thC) bronze of a seated Holy Kannon by Koun Takamura (1852-1934). Kannon, the Bodhisattva of mercy and compassion, is elegantly sculpted, seated on a rock holding a scroll (Buddhist sutra) in her left hand, her hair piled in a tall topknot, wearing a necklace and long robe. The artist has gracefully depicted Kannon''s subtle facial expression, elegant pose and cascading robe.
 
Signed in an impressed seal at the rear, Koun Takamura (1852-1934), one of Japan’s most celebrated sculptors and a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Measures 18cm tall, 13.5cm wide x 9.5cm deep, weighs 1.6kg.
 
Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy (Avalokiteshvara), Lord of Compassion, is an extremely popular deity in Japan. Largely due to her efficacy at answering prayers and the many miracles attributed to her, and many temples are named after her.
 
Beautiful cast and patinated, partly gilded.
