Japanese Meiji/taisho (early 20thc) Bronze Of Shojo By Matsumori/shosei

Japanese Meiji/Taisho (early 20thC) bronze okimono of Shojo by Matsumori/Shosei. The drunken spirit is depicted wearing loose robes and with her long hair flowing behind her back, with a sake cup in her left hand and a ladle in her right. Signed with a seal on the reverse for Matsumori. Comes in its original wooden box (tomobako). Measures ca 15cm wide x 11cm deep x 20cm high. Weight 2.6kg (with box).
 
Good condition with nice patina.
 
A Shojo is a Japanese sea spirit with similarities to a ghost but differing from the latter in the fact that Shojo are tangible. It enjoys drinking alcohol, especially sake. Legend has it that workers at breweries in Japan have seen Shojo lurking about after indulging in their products. (Sake is revered by immortals for its immortality-granting powers.)
