Pair of Important 17th Century French Renaissance Serving Tables Unrestored

17th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this very rare and important pair of original French Renaissance period serving tables, they are 17th century examples with the original drawers

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

A single one of this exact table sold in Dorotheum auctions in 2017 for $19,000 USD or 17,401 euros, here we have an exact pair which is as rare as rare can be given the age

The tables came to me in a very sorry state, they had serious woodworm all over on the underside of the top and the base has been heavily affected. They have been treated for the worm maybe four times so it should all be fine now however I can't 100% guarantee it. We have cleaned waxed and polished them from top to bottom, one of the drawers has slightly swollen and doesn't fully shut, I can have this restored and lightly sanded down but I wanted to let the new owner decide

This are important, museum quality tables that with the right restorer, will be worth a small fortune, I have priced them as such so the new owners can invest as much as they like in whatever level of restoration they desire and still be on the right side of the investment

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Renaissance furniture from the 16th and 17th centuries reflects classical architectural motifs, including columns, pilasters, gadrooning, and detailed relief carvings inspired by Italian and Greco-Roman antiquities.

Craftsmen predominantly utilized solid local hardwoods such as walnut and oak, joined using hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery alongside wooden pegs for maximum structural endurance.

Authentic pieces feature signs of historical hand tools, such as pit-saw marks, irregular peg placement, hand-forged iron hardware, and natural oxidation along timber joints over centuries.

These versatile pieces serve effectively as elevated console tables in grand entrance halls, sophisticated sideboards in formal dining rooms, or architectural anchor points flanking structural features.

To preserve historic patination, maintain a stable indoor humidity level, avoid direct sunlight or heat sources, and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly without harsh chemical solvents.
