Pair of Antique Victorian 1880 Continental Jacobean Gothic Revival Bookcases

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for this lovely pair of stunning circa 1860-1880 hand carved Continental Oak, Library bookcase cabinets in the Jacobean / Gothic Revival taste most likely Dutch

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price

A very good looking well made and decorative pair, it is very rare to find these bookcases as a pair and with the original glass window panels, usually they were replaced as was the fashion in the Edwardian era. They are carved in the Jacobean and Gothic revival taste which is super decorative, they look to be Dutch to me, they are very tall and attractive as art furniture

Condition wise they have been cleaned waxed and polished, there will be some patination marks here or there from honest age and use, the second bookcase has two small losses to the timber, I can have these replaced if the new owner wishes with my cabinet maker for the cost price

Dimensions

Height:- 158.5cm top section, 105cm base, 263.5cm total

Width:- 95cm top, 92cm base

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival furniture from the late nineteenth century incorporates architectural motifs from the medieval period, including tracery, pointed arches, carved foliage, and heraldic crestings. The style emphasised monumental proportions, dark hardwoods, and heavy relief carvings that drew inspiration from historic European churches and manor houses.

Victorian cabinet makers primarily utilised solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and mahogany for structural frames and detailed carvings. Marquetry accents often featured contrasting timbers, while upper display sections utilised float glass set within timber astragal glazing bars.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-carving, such as slight asymmetry in repeating motifs and hand-cut joinery like dovetail joints. Timber surfaces will exhibit natural age-related oxidisation, shrinkage lines, and uneven wear pattern on handles and bases.

Designers balance heavy carved oak bookcases by placing them against neutral, light-coloured walls to highlight their structural silhouettes. Pairing these imposing timber structures with modern minimalist seating, contemporary lighting, and unadorned glass accessories creates a curated contrast.

Maintain timber furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep cabinets away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent timber shrinkage, cracking, or veneer lifting.
