Description

Just arrived from eastern Turkey, this late 19th century Kurdish Jaf tribe 'namakdan' (salt-bag) in wonderful, thick, lustrous pile on the face and horizontal bands of various natural colours on the back.

Salt-bags, in the main, were containers for rock-salt which was carried on migrations and the salt given to the pack-animals to prevent dehydration.

19th century salt-bags of the Kurdish tribes are now very scarce.
