19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Beautiful pair of very large late 19th century Tibetan bronze temple lions/Foo dogs,c1880. I have owned many of these over the years and these are by far the best. Standing at 2 feet tall and weighing around 35kgs (I cannot fit them on my scales/they are too heavy) these are highly impressive and decorative pieces. The casting is very fine with lovely detail to the features, mane, claws etc with key facets highlighted in gilt. The bronze has aged well and taken on a lovely deep rich colour. Overall condition is good . Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view the item or have any questions.

Price includes FREE UK delivery. These are very large and heavy so please contact me regarding international shipping.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tibetan temple lions, also known as Snow Lions or Foo Dogs, are mythical guardian creatures in Asian art and Tibetan Buddhist symbolism, traditionally placed in pairs at entryways of temples and grand estates to ward off negative energy.

These figures were typically cast using the lost-wax technique, composed of copper-alloy bronze with hand-chased surface details and contrasting polished brass or gilt decorative accents.

Authentic 19th-century bronze pieces display natural age patina, casting seams or core residues internally, intricate hand-engraved surface work, and heavy weight proportionate to cast metal construction.

A pair of heavy bronze lions can be placed flanking an entryway door, arranged within a foyer display, or positioned beside a fireplace hearth to anchor an eclectic design scheme.

Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth is recommended, while periodic applications of microcrystalline wax help protect the patina and prevent unwanted surface oxidisation without damaging original finishes.
