A very fine late 18th century large silver twin handled bowl of navette shape, smooth to the lower half, and with ornately shaped fluting above. Reeded detail to the rim and elegant square topped handles with cast reeded detail to the upper half ending with a small spur half way down and kicked out tail. Original bright cut engraved decoration, very finely executed with a double garland of laurel leaves running below the rim across the convex fluting and a band of sinuous curves running along the bottom of these sections and also just above the foot. The tightly concave channels running vertically between the flutes are engraved with a stylised seaweed effect and there are vacant laurel wreath cartouches engraved to each side. The inside is gilded.
Hallmarked for London 1798. I cannot find any maker''s initials; there isn''t space for them alongside the other hallmarks so I don''t think they have been rubbed, more likely either missed off or obscured amongst the patterns elsewhere.
It measures 20.7cm (8 1/8'') wide across the handles, 9.8cm (3 7/8'') side to side and 9.2cm (3 5/8'') high to the centre of the rim (13cm (5 1/8'') high to the handles). It has a capacity of 750ml / 1 1/4 pints. A very good gauge of silver, it weighs 295g / 9.5ozt.
In excellent condition with no damage, dents or repairs and very minor handling wear. The laurel wreath on one side is very slightly rubbed but all the rest of the decoration and marks are crisp.
