Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table is a variant of the drop-leaf table developed in the seventeenth century and widely produced throughout the eighteenth century. It incorporates hinged legs, or gates, that swing outward from the main frame to support extended circular or oval leaves.

In Britain, eighteenth-century gateleg tables were predominantly constructed from solid native timber such as oak, walnut, or fruitwood. The joints were typically hand-pegged, using wooden dowels rather than modern adhesives or screws.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved turned legs, peg joinery, and natural shrinkage across the grain of the wood top. Look for original iron hinges, wooden drawer runners, and uneven wear consistent with centuries of use.

An antique gateleg table functions well as a compact dining table, a hall table positioned against a wall with flaps lowered, or a sofa side table. Pairing the dark timber with contemporary seating or minimalist decor creates an effective visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber patination. Avoid placing the table near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent cracking and warping.
