This rare SET OF SIX ENGLISH BLUE AND WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED PLATES bear the mark of the short-lived pottery of ELKIN & NEWBON, Stafford Street, Longton, Staffordshire 1844-45.

They are from their BOTANICAL BEAUTIES series which is illustrated in Coysh and Henrywood’s Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780-1880) Vol 1 Page 49.

All of the Plates are in good condition. There are no chips or restoration.

A very attractive and eye-catching display.

Transferware is earthenware decorated by applying an ink design printed from an engraved copper plate onto tissue paper and transferring it directly onto the ceramic body before glazing. This technique was popularised in Staffordshire during the 18th and 19th centuries to produce detailed botanical and topographical designs.

19th-century transferware plates were typically manufactured from white or cream earthenware clay bodies. The printed design was produced using cobalt oxide ink for the signature blue underglaze, which was then protected by a clear lead glaze.

Authentic pieces frequently display underglaze printed or impressed maker marks on the underside, detailing the manufacturer or pattern name. Other indicator signs include microscopic crazing within the glaze, minor kiln stilt marks on the reverse, and characteristic blue bleed into the white ground.

Plates can be mounted on a wall using wire hangers to create a symmetry grid above a sideboard, displayed on a traditional wooden dresser rack, or arranged in a shallow dish display case alongside contemporary ceramics.

Plates should be washed by hand in warm water using a gentle liquid detergent and dried immediately with a soft cloth. Dishwashers, microwave ovens, and prolonged soaking must be avoided to prevent moisture entering hair-line cracks or crazing.
