Large And Exceptionally Rare Superb Quality Late 18th Century Mahogany Cutlery Urn

An exceptionally rare superb quality late 18th century (circa 1800) mahogany cutlery urn of large proportions with brass inlaid decoration.
 
This large cutlery urn consists of a turned gilt brass ball finial to the top leading down to a mahogany cover of dome form with brass inlaid stringing, the cover lifting to reveal a stepped interior for the storage of cutlery or knives.
 
The main section of rounded and tapered form, also of mahogany and brass inlaid stringing leading down to a brass diamond shaped escutcheon with brass plaque below with engraved armorial of a griffin holding a battle axe, this crest believed to be that of the Wills family, Landrake, Cornwall.
 
To either side of the urn a brass ring and lion mask handle, the urn being supported by a mahogany shaped stem with brass inlaid stringing on square platform base terminating with four brass ball feet.
 
This cutlery urn is in very good condition for age with evidence of old repairs, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
