Tunbridge Ware originated in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as souvenirs for visitors to the spa town. Craftsmen developed a mosaic technique assembling end-grain wooden sticks into intricate patterns and pictorial scenes, which were applied to small wooden objects such as tea caddies, writing slopes, and jewellery boxes.

Tunbridge Ware makers relied on a variety of natural and dyed timbers to create contrasting colours without paint, including holly, sycamore, plum, yew, and oak. These tessellated wooden strips were typically set against dark hardwood veneers such as rosewood or walnut.

Authentic pieces display genuine end-grain wood mosaic construction rather than printed paper or painted imitations. Examining the borders and central motifs reveals tiny individual wooden square tesserae, often accompanied by original brass keyhole escutcheons, lead linings, or turned wooden bun feet.
