We are delighted to offer this magnificent Victorian solid silver gilt mug cup made in London 1891 with marks of Elkington & Co Ltd.
Needless to mention, the mug exudes opulence and splendour with its fully silver gilt (gold on top of solid silver) design which certainly captivates the attention of any onlookers in spite of its relatively modest stature.
In addition to its splendour, the mug has been exquisitely decorated with hand-chased naturalistic floral and foliate motifs. The embossing is very impressive with high relief and the flower buds stand out from the stippled background. The applied handle is also a lovely touch with a continued naturalistic vine-like design.
Such a combination of opulence and fine silver artistry makes this mug not only a practical piece of silverware but a highly complimentary one to interior settings. Whether as a single accenting piece or amongst antique decor, this may just be the perfect article to highlight and elevate the ambience of the interior.
Furthermore, the gilding protects the silver from tarnishing, especially with content that may be held within and as such also serves as a wonderful way to enjoy a drink even today in the most indulgent manner.
What is also interesting about this mug is the maker''s mark. It has apparently been overstruck (on what appears to be Joseph Angell''s mark) which is a fairly uncommon and somewhat historically interesting practice whereby large retailers would sometimes outsource wares to equally proficient silversmithing firms to catch up with their high output. As a result, one may occasionally come across examples of overstruck maker''s marks or recognise the same style/hand on other maker''s wares.
Overall a very impressive and opulent mug ideal for collections or for practical usage. Whether be it as a treat for yourself or as a gift for someone special, this mug certainly is a unique and spectacular example of a fine Victorian naturalistic silver gilt mug.
...The mug is hallmarked with full English marks on the side.
