Description

A good mid-19th century mahogany cased 8-day longcase clock by William Roberts of Bath.

The painted dial features roman numerals, 2 subsidiary dials: seconds and days of the month, each with ornate gilded minute/hour hands and black steel subsidiary hands. The 8-day movement strikes hours on a bell. The painted quadrants around the dial feature Lady’s dressed in elaborate clothes. The domed panel above the dial features a seated ‘King’ with two attendants. The flame mahogany case has turned columns to each side, and to the hood. Three brass phoenix finials perched on brass spheres adorn the domed pediment.

Dated: c.1840-60.

The maker: William Roberts of Bath - Born in Ipswich 1793. Moved to Bath and is known to have run his business from 39 Walcot Street, Bath from 1826. In 1838 he became a juror at Bath Quarter Sessioins. Later moved his business to 16 and later 7 Green Street, Bath.
