A charming bone china bowl by Daisy Makeig-Jones, Wedgwood, England. Fairyland orange lustre octagonal bowl with gilded Phoenix bird, Portland vase on the bottom and pattern number Z4825. The checkerboard rim and base with inner medallion, ruyi and cloud rim and auspicious objects in gilt. Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones was a pottery designer for Wedgwood. She is best known for her "Fairyland Lustre" series. She was born in Wath-upon-Dearne near Rotherham in Yorkshire, the eldest of seven children, and she came from a professional background. After attending boarding school and studying the Torquay School of Art, she joined Wedgwood in 1909. In 1914, Daisy became a full designer with her own studio. After her exposure to the varied decorative techniques employed in ceramic production, she endeavored to create a completely new and captivating style by combining the three techniques of underglaze mottling, overglaze graining, and iridescence together with fanciful designs outlined in gilt. Daisy convinced her studio neighbor James Hodgkiss and his decoration staff to help her develop the idea, and the first pattern in the First Ten Lustre series debuted in October 1914. The First Ten Lustre Ranges, consecutive pattern numbers Z4823 to Z4832, consisted of ten different patterns with different combinations of lustre colors. The First Lustres’ appearance on the market was a mere 9 months after Daisy had become a designer, and as such is evidence of her artistic vision and talent as well as her tenacity and persistence. In this range, Daisy used the ‘Phoenix’ pattern orange lustre exterior and the interior is finished in a luxurious blue mottled glaze from blue to purple. The orange was said to be Daisy’s favorite lustre color. She wished to put her own unique touch on the lustres. This range was designed by Daisy Makeig Jones and was produced from 1914 to 1929 and now it is extremely collectible. Limited editions and the ever-growing interest in Daisy Makeig-Jones' work have led to prices rising year on year. Condition: Minimal wear to the gilding consistent with age. Otherwise, the bowl is in excellent antique condition.Some of the ribs of the bowl appear worn in the photograph. In reality, this is an effect of the reflection. The surfaces of the bowl are very glossy, and the actual appearance of the bowl is much better than shown in the photo.
