This exquisite pair of antique porcelain figurines, crafted in the style of the renowned French artist Jacob Petit, depicts a dating couple from the mid-19th century. The figurines are impeccably molded with natural poses and expressive facial features, showcasing the artist''s exceptional skill. Each figure is hand-painted and adorned with gilt highlights and intricate patterns, adding to their charm and elegance. The woman holds a delicate flower in her right hand and wears an expression of slight embarrassment, while the gentleman is dressed in equally refined attire. Both figurines are set on Rococo-style bases decorated with gilt acanthus scrolls, which enhance their aesthetic appeal.
These pieces are crafted in the style of Jacob Petit (1796-1868), originally Jacob Mordecai, a celebrated French porcelain manufacturer of the 19th century. Petit began his career by studying drawing in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros before joining the famous Sčvres Manufactory in 1822, where he painted porcelain wares. After traveling and studying throughout Europe, Petit returned to France in 1830-31 and published a comprehensive collection of interior decorations. Along with his brother Mardochée, Petit purchased a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau in 1830 and later moved his operations to Paris in 1863.
Petit''s works are renowned for their purely ornamental character, including vases, statuettes, and clocks. His high-quality porcelain pieces, often fired in Limoges, are characterized by a distinctive color palette—pale pink, light green, mauve, black, and gold. His designs are idiosyncratic interpretations of the 18th-century rocaille style, reflecting the popular neo-Rococo aesthetic during the reign of Louis-Philippe (1830–48). In the second half of the 19th century, Petit was unique in selling unpainted porcelain molds to the Russian Imperial Porcelain Factory under Empe
...ror Alexander II, which was then decorated by Russian artists. These pieces often bear dual marks: the French and the Alexander marks, overglazed within a blue laurel wreath. The motifs of Petit''s products are mainly inspired by 18th-century porcelain, typical of the Neo-Rococo style. On the collectors'' market, Jacob Petit''s works, particularly porcelain clock sets and figurines, are highly sought after and valued. Please note: there are holes drilled in the pedestals on which the figures rest-likely indicating a previous owner intended to convert them into lamps. Dimensions: Height of figurines: 26.5 cm, width: 9 cm, depth: 10 cm. Total weight of both figurines: 1668 grams. Condition: The figurine of the woman has minor damage - two fingertips on her right hand are chipped. The figurine of the man has a chipped index finger on his left hand. There is also minor loss of gold paint consistent with age. Otherwise, both pieces are in excellent antique condition.
