Antique Porcelain Figurine , Dressel, Kister & Cie, Germany, C. 1907

1900 - 1920
Description

An exquisite antique porcelain figurine depicting a finely dressed gentleman in a purple coat adorned with gilt decoration, a bronze-colored hat with a blue bow, and gold-buckled shoes. The piece is beautifully glazed and features finely hand-painted polychrome overglaze details. It stands on a Rococo-style round base with gold accents, adding a touch of elegance and luxury to the artwork. This exceptional figurine is a true work of art, distinguished by its intricate detail and meticulous craftsmanship, particularly evident in the delicately sculpted face and fingers. Each element of the composition is rendered with great precision, showcasing the skill and artistry of the maker. The underside bears the blue crosier mark of Dressel, Kister & Cie. The Dressel, Kister & Cie porcelain factory was established in 1853 when Johann Friedrich Andreas Kister, Mr. Dressel, and another associate purchased a factory in Passau, Germany. The company gained a reputation for producing high-quality porcelain figurines and was particularly successful in exporting to France and Italy during its early years.

In 1907, the company hired Fillipo Cifariello, a designer from Capodimonte/Naples, Italy, who created many beautiful figurines. However, his career was marred by controversy when he was accused of murdering his French wife, though the outcome of the trial is unclear. Despite the challenges of World War I, the company continued to thrive, and its figurines remained highly sought after. Notably, one of their renowned designers, Ernst Derra, is credited with designing stunning medieval figurines. These artists often drew inspiration from historical paintings and classical theatre, focusing on meticulous attention to detail.

The worldwide economic collapse in the 1930s severely reduced demand for luxury items. Additionally, the local china clay deposits were nearly depleted, which further impacted the company. As a result, the factory went bankrupt in 1936 and was acquired by the City of Passau. It continued to operate until it finally closed in 1952. Dimensions: Height: 24.7 cm, Width: 15 cm, Depth: 11 cm, Weight: 717 grams. Condition: The figurine is in excellent antique condition, with a few chips on the wooden pedestal. There is no loss of paint or enamel. Please study the accompanying photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of this description. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. Please note that shipping costs include labour, packaging, and postage.
