Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk consists of a rectangular top section resting on two independent pedestals equipped with drawers. Introduced in earlier periods and refined during the Victorian era, these desks typically feature solid wood construction, leather-lined writing surfaces, and detailed hand-carved mouldings.

Late Victorian desks were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Writing surfaces were frequently inlaid with gold-tooled leather or skiver, while drawer handles and escutcheons were cast in solid brass.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer linings, original brass lock mechanisms, and natural wear patterns around the handles and kneehole. Stamped makers marks or brass plaques on drawer edges can also verify period production.

Place the desk centrally in a dedicated home office or library space to highlight its profile. Combine it with contemporary task lighting and neutral wall tones to balance the visual weight of the carved oak.

Keep the desk away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and leather cracking. Clean the wood using a natural beeswax polish along the grain, and treat the leather writing inset with a specialised leather conditioner.
