Technical Description
An 18th-century wine glass goblet dating to c1760. It has a large round funnel bowl which has been engraved in diamond point with the name J Edden with quills in diamond point either side. Sits on a very rare single series opaque twist stem consisting of three spiral gauzes. Conical foot.
A very personal glass with the quills suggesting a law or writing profession and perhaps as a retirement gift or even used as a personal glass in the local tavern where you glass would be kept, engraved with your name. It’s a good-sized bowl and could be used for beer as well as wine.
The three spiral gauze stem is a very rare form, a pair or two pairs being the norm. Classified as a single series which has an approx. 1:10 ratio to the double series opaque twist stem.
A fine glass indeed.
