This is a set of three late Georgian, mouth-blown, Bristol blue, barrel-shaped spirit decanters dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1820.
The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.
The decanters are barrel-shaped with everted pouring rims. The decanters were blown in Bristol blue glass and then gilded with faux labels for Hollands Rum and Brandy. The pouring rims are also gilded. The bases measure 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter and have polished out pontil marks to the undersides. The decanters are 17.5 cm (7 inches) in height without the stoppers and 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height with the stoppers inserted.
The stoppers are of facet cut solid ball form and appear to be the originals. They are decorated with the remains of gilding to the tops, are of the same colour and shade, and are an excellent fit.
There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. The gilding is heavily rubbed in places which adds to their charm as far as we are concerned. Dimensions vary slightly from decanter to decanter as should be expected of mouth-blown glass.
Each decanter weighs 550 g. (~ 1 lb. 3 oz.). It''s hard to find three decanters of this age in good order so a scarce set.
