Derby Porcelain Figure Of Africa From The Four Quarters Of The Globe

£785    $994    €947
A fine Derby figure of a boy representing Africa from the series The Four Quarters Of The Globe. He stands barefoot on a naturalistic base half kneeling on his companion animal, a very cute looking little lion. He is clad in pink and turquoise stole with an impressive elephant''s head headdress. He holds a red lobster in his right hand and the left hand is cupping a cornucopia of exotic fruit. Patch marks and incised N200, c.1770.

Reference: Derby Porcelain Figures, Bradshaw, entry number 200, plate 249.

He measures 15.3cm (6'') high and 7cm (2 3/4'') by 6.5cm (2 1/2'') wide and deep.

In rarely excellent condition. The lobster has had the tips of three legs chipped but that appears to be the only issue to note. I cannot find any repairs or restoration; this black enamel is thickly applied and fires a bit unevenly but everything appears fine. Very minor handling wear, just a little in places to the black enamel and to the edge of the top fold of his pink stole around his waist. There is a firing crack across the lion''s tail and another small firing fault to the back of his tail.
