Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally proportioned mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors served to reflect natural light into the room and act as a focal architectural element above the hearth.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors were constructed with a solid timber frame, usually pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso and clay bole. Fine gold leaf was applied over this foundation using water or oil gilding techniques, framing silvered glass backed with protective wood panels.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle signs of natural age, such as gentle foxing in the glass silvering, micro-cracking in the gesso composition, and minor wear revealing the reddish bole beneath the gilding. Hand-cut backboards and historic fixing rings also help confirm age.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or a wide sideboard to anchor the rooms proportions. Combining the rich gilded finish with clean contemporary lines creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or clean microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve historic gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not seep onto the gilded border.
