Charles Grant, Character Portrait In Watercolour & Pencil

This sensitively drawn portrait shows a mature lady with an intent gaze seated with her book. Her face displays great character and is well painted in watercolour. Her costume details - a frothy cap trimmed with blue ribbon and a pink shawl decorated with blue flowers - are executed in pencil and watercolour.
 
The portrait is signed bottom left - C Grant del. Charles Grant was actively painting between 1825 and 1845. He exhibited at the Royal Academy before moving to India where he changed career and became a publisher.
 
In clean condition, the portrait is presented in a period bird''s eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip (minor loss to a small area of the slip).
