Marine Chronometer by Barraud, London

19th century
Description

A good mid-19th century MARINE CHRONOMETER in perfect working order, by the famous firm of Barraud, London. Contained in its original brass-bound rosewood 3-tier case, the 56-hour movement features Earnshaw escapement with bi-metallic balance; helical hairspring; a good engraved and silvered dial (signed “Barraud, maker to the Royal Navy, 41, Cornhill London”) with subsidiary “up-and-down” and seconds dials together with the original blued steel hands. It is set within its gimballed brass bowl and numbered 1973 to both the dial and the circular ivory disc to the front of the case. (Ivory exemption certificate ref: 9M37W4EK) Full working order and guaranteed for at least two years.

* The firm Barraud was established by the eminent maker of chronometers, Paul Philip Barraud (1752-1820; Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1810/11) whose three sons followed him into the business. The company became the partnership of Barraud & Lund in 1838 and continued into business until the end of the 19th century. The relatively earlier number of this chronometer (1973) would date this as circa 1840.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
