Antique Collectible Porcelain Gold Gilt Vase by Martial Redon, Limoges, C. 1882

19th century
Description

Beautiful Antique Art Nouveau style, twin handled amphora shaped vase by Martial Redon, Limoges France. The piece featuring a round body elegant neck and twin handles. Overglaze polychrome painting, heavily gilt details, and hand painted flowers and blue feathered bird image which contrasts nicely with the rich gilding. This decorative vase has a floral design on the front of the vase in complimenting shades of gold, white and blue. The painting is accented with gold paint, the top of the vase is also decorated in gold and has a "cut out" pattern and scrolled ear shape handles. On the bottom Martial Redon company mark according to the stated time of production. It is a graceful and elegant Limoges vase to take pride of place in your collection. In 1853, three founders - Pierre-Justin Gibus, Alpinien Margaine and Martial Redon - set up the company ‘Gibus et Cie’ and decided to build another hard porcelain factory in Limoges. This is how the manufacture Le Pré des Bénédictins came into being in the city. The organizer of the business at that time became Pierre-Justin Gibus, who had received a substantial sum from his father for the development of the business and was responsible for technical production, Margaine for mould making and decoration, and Redon for administration. Most of the factory's production consisted of table sets and decorative items. The volume was quite large, so painting was sometimes outsourced to other companies (e.g. Haviland). Already in 1855, the company received an award for the whiteness of its porcelain and the beauty of its design, at the "l'Exposition Universelle de Paris." "The whole exposition of the house of Gibus, especially its blue tones, won all the votes of the jury. It is similar to the exhibition of porcelain in Sèvres" - such words in 1858 critics noted the awarding of a gold medal to porcelain in the exhibition centre of France (Paris). The success encouraged an increase in wealthy customers, so production switched to luxury goods, which allowed the manufactory to become one of the four largest, located in Limoges. In 1860 it employed two hundred people. Sales outlets included both its own shop in Paris and those workshops where the porcelain went for painting (for example, distribution was handled by the same firm Haviland & Co). In 1872, Margaine left the company, which was renamed ‘Gibus et Redon’, and production moved to the Limoges suburb of Casseaux. The company's staff increased to 250 employees. During this period, ‘Gibus et Redon’ porcelain continues to participate in exhibitions, where it receives top honors. In 1881, Gibus resigns to concentrate on his work at the Chamber of Commerce of Limoges, where he held the post of treasurer. From then on, Martial Redon solely manages the factory, and the company changes its name to ‘Martial Redon’ from the following year. This continued until Redon's death in 1890, after which his son Joseph took over the management of the business, retaining both the company name and the old branding. A great success for ‘Martial Redon’ was the exposition of porcelain at the International Colonial and Export Exhibition in Amsterdam (1883), awarded an honorable mention for vases in the technique of pate sur pate. The art products of ‘Martial Radon’ are highly collectible both then and now.
