Antique Teapot And Creamer, W. Hackwood Style, Wedgwood, C. 1823
£300 $412 €345
Dating to the early 1800s, this partial yellow ware tea set is similar to those made by William Hackwood, Wedgwood''s main modeler. The pieces are finely detailed and molded with an applied band of white flowers and leaves around the bodies. The flowers and other decorative elements were separately molded from white glazed clay and applied to the yellow ware body before it was fired. This decorative technique is known as sprigging. The teapot lid has a very tiny vent hole in the finial to release steam from the hot tea. The teapot and creamer were crafted by a highly skilled master potter and are elaborately decorated with raised relief patterns above and below the central band around the bodies. Early creamers like this were molded with a wide spout that flows out of the body. The elaborate handle also flows out of the body rather than being separately molded and attached. Yellow ware (glazed caneware) was developed by Wedgwood in the 1770s. It usually was dry-bodied but later was als...o produced with a clear lead glaze. The teapot and creamer are unmarked, but they strongly resemble originals made by William Hackwood for Wedgwood. Any advanced collector would be pleased to add these pieces to their yellow ware collection.
William Hackwood is one of the most important figures in the pottery industry in Staffordshire. He worked for Wedgwood from 1769 until 1832, starting at around 13 years old and, after some years, becoming the main modeler at the factory. Five models of his work are on exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
