Antique Teapot And Creamer, W. Hackwood Style, Wedgwood, C. 1823

Dating to the early 1800s, this partial yellow ware tea set is similar to those made by William Hackwood, Wedgwood''s main modeler. The pieces are finely detailed and molded with an applied band of white flowers and leaves around the bodies. The flowers and other decorative elements were separately molded from white glazed clay and applied to the yellow ware body before it was fired. This decorative technique is known as sprigging. The teapot lid has a very tiny vent hole in the finial to release steam from the hot tea. The teapot and creamer were crafted by a highly skilled master potter and are elaborately decorated with raised relief patterns above and below the central band around the bodies. Early creamers like this were molded with a wide spout that flows out of the body. The elaborate handle also flows out of the body rather than being separately molded and attached.
