Antique Longcase Clock Griffiths Monmouth

Description

A fine quality Georgian Monmouthshire longcase clock. A regionally styled double hood pediment with a swan-neck and central brass finial. Corinthium capped fluted hood columns and Greek Key blocks to the hood. Fluted trunk sides. An elegant, well proportioned solid mahogany case with choice timbers. A very early example of a painted dial by Osbourne (1777-1779) with raised gilt rose corners, date and seconds indicators. Lunar moon-phases to the arch with a country scene and sailing frigate. An 8-day mechanism with finely finished steelwork striking the hours on a bell.

John Charles Griffiths of Monmouth is recorded in Peates' 'Clockmakers in Wales' book as being registered in the trade directory of 1791.
