A fine Derby figure of a girl representing Europe from the series The Four Quarters Of The Globe. She stands barefoot on a naturalistic base with a horse as her companion animal lying behind her. She is classically dressed in a turqouise floral dress and stole with a small crown on her head and holding an orb in her right hand, the left arm held aloft (originally holding a sceptre). Around her feet are strewn symbols of civilisation, a soldier''s helmet, written scrolls and books, a small mallet and artist''s palette. Patch marks and incised N200, c.1770.
Reference: Derby Porcelain Figures, Bradshaw, entry number 200, plate 249.
She measures 16cm (6 1/4'') high and 9cm (3 1/2'') by 6.6cm (2 5/8'') wide and deep.
In good condition and displays superbly: there has been some professional restoration to her left arm. The porcelain appears essentially sound underneath but the tips of her fingers will have had a bit of work to allow for the missing sceptre; this has been excellently done. There has also been some really excellent restoration to the neck and it took quite some studying to detect. The horse''s right foreleg has also been repaired and invisibly touched up. A small scuff to the horse''s upper lip and the tips of her crown.
