Flowers on the Windowsill, Ca 1935, the Artist's Studio, an Interior with a View Art Deco Period Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This subtle art deco period painting really shows the difference a humble pot of flowers can make to a home! Judging from the trees outside, it is early spring at best, in what appears to be a northern redbrick town - but dappled light and azure blue blossoms make the interior warm, summery and almost give it a mediterranean feel. Clearly the artist saw his flowers as a source of joy which he wants to share with the beholder.

Painted in the 1930s and presented in its original wood carved frame, our oil on canvas is signed at the lower right. I wonder if the signature might be that of the Belgian artist Rodolphe Strebelle (1880-1959), but I am not sure if I have identified it correctly. Measuring 65 x 55 cm for the canvas alone, the overall framed size is 80 x 69 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Interwar still life paintings from the 1930s often combine post-impressionist colour palette sensibilities with Art Deco structural compositions, frequently featuring domestic interior elements alongside exterior views.

Oil paintings from this era were typically executed using oil pigments applied to woven cotton or linen canvas stretched across a wooden strainer, often mounted in carved or moulded timber frames.

Authentic pieces feature consistent surface craquelure, age-related darkening or discolouration on the reverse canvas, period-appropriate stretcher construction, and natural wear to the painted or gilded wooden frame.

A vintage floral oil painting can be styled by hanging it above a sideboard or console table, or leaning it against a wall on a shelf alongside contemporary ceramic vases to create texture and contrast.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity. Clean light dust gently using a soft, dry artist brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaning solutions.
