A humorous hand coloured copper engraving by the printer and publisher Thomas Mclean (1788-1875).
An amusing scene lampooning the fashion for smoking.
Titled ‘Puff, Puff, It is an age of Puffing, Puff,Puff, Puff’.
The engraving depicts a disparate group of people all puffing away and creating great clouds of tobacco smoke.
Some are elegantly dressed ladies and gentlemen, others are trades people going about their business.
There is a speech bubble to top right:
‘Vell I’de sooner have a Pipe of Backer after all, but vun might as well be out of the world as out of the Fashion’.
