Antique Silver Button Hole / Posy Holder Hallmarked London 1910

A lovely antique silver boutonniere vase or posy holder for displaying flowers in one''s button hole or top pocket. This button hole posy holder is in plain polished silver with a tube in which to place the posy, and the bulbous base holds a small amount of water to keep it fresh. At the top there is a clip to fit over a pocket or lapel.
 
These small posy holders are often known as a ''tussie-mussie'' with tussie meaning nosegay and mussie, deriving from the wettened moss used to keep the nosegay fresh.
 
  
 
On the back hallmarks are visible for the London Assay office with a date mark for 1910, Lion Passant indicating sterling silver and the maker''s mark for the silvermaker: Frederick William Rowe. There is also a stamped patent number: R2558235.
 
A delightful and interesting antique, this would make a fabulous gift for a discerning dresser or lovely accessory for a wedding!
