Measures 108cm wide, 142cm tall & 12cm deep
Cupid is the Roman god of love, attraction, and desire.
Cupid has a history that can be traced back to Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, Cupid is known as Eros, the son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, beauty, and pleasure. The name Eros is also the origin of the word ''erotic''.
In Roman mythology, Cupid is the son of Venus, the Roman equivalent of Aphrodite. Cupid''s name comes from the Latin word cupere, which means ''to desire''.
During the Italian Renaissance, many artists began to include several Cupids in a single painting. Known initially as amorini, these figures eventually evolved into putti, cherubic children found in many mythological and even biblical scenes of the period.
Love hurts
Did you know Cupid, carries two types of arrows?
One type has sharp, golden tips that create uncontrollable desire. The other has blunt, leaden tips that cause its victims to flee in disgust. In ancient Rome, sexual desire was regarded as a normal part of daily life. But it was considered dangerous if it became too dominant.
Young Cupid embodies this contradiction. In Old Master paintings, he’s a toddler with lethal weapons.
